The presumed knifeman in the murder of King Edward VII student Mfundo Ntshangase was denied bail in the Randburg magistrate's court yesterday.
The 16-year-old's case was held in camera after police arrested him at a hideout in Hillbrow on Thursday last week. He is the only one of the seven suspects who has been kept in detention.
The boy was the sixth suspect to be arrested in the murder of Ntshangase at a party in Randburg. He first appeared in court on Tuesday with a seventh suspect.
Four other boys from Athlone Boys' High were arrested at school two weeks ago and a fifth was picked up at Central Johannesburg College.
The five appeared in court on Thursday last week. They were all released into the custody of their parents. The magistrate issued a stern warning to the parents to keep their sons under firm control until their next appearance on October 10.
The seventh boy, arrested on Tuesday, was released the same day into the custody of his parents after his court hearing.
Police refused to say why the boy they believe "stabbed Ntshangase" is in custody while his six co-accused were sent home.
He will appear again in court on October 25.
Ntshangase, a promising basketball player and the only son of a senior official at the Gauteng Education department, was killed about two weeks ago at a party held after a school function.
