An array of South African athletics greats have joined forces to form a foundation aimed at developing the sport in the country.

Bokamoso bja Bomampudi Batseleng Sports Foundation is the brainchild of former South African Marathon champion Daniel "Mampudi" Radebe.

Some of its members include Josia Thugwane, Mathews Temane, Lawrence Peu, Adam Motlagale, Jan Tau, Zithulele Sinqe and Dimakatso Menong.

"Our objective is to teach youngsters about the basics of athletics, with the main focus on schools," said Radebe.

"We will also get experts dealing with life skills programmes and HIV/Aids awareness to address the students on a regular basis.

"Athletics South Africa is doing a great job but we thought it a good idea that as current and former top athletes we also make a meaningful contribution."

Radebe said the foundation will be launched in Mohlakeng on October 20. On that day, there will also be a 10 mile-Mogale City Community Challenge road race, starting and finishing at Mohlakeng Stadium.

"The route will also include some parts of Bekkersdal. There will also be a three-mile race where we are targeting political and community leaders," said Radebe.

"In addition, we will also have a two-mile race for athletes of yesteryear such as Xolile Yawa, Temane, Motlagale, Tau and Sinqe.

"We are planning to have a big gathering at night on that day where former and current athletes will talk about improving our sport."

Barbara Creecy, MEC for sports, arts, culture and recreation in Gauteng and MEC of education Angie Motshekga will also be invited to the launch.
