Team Mpumalanga bound for the 2007 South Africa Games in the Free State next week has vowed to surpass the success of the provincial indigenous games team.

The indigenous games team came second in the national indigenous games in East London last month. The SA Games are billed for Bloemfontein from September 24 to 29.

Sammy Mpatlanyane, spokesman for Mpumalanga's department of sports and culture, said: "Mpumalanga has prepared well for the games as selected athletes were put through a vigorous training session to get them ready.

"The participants have committed themselves to hoist the flag of the province sky high at the games by performing well and fighting for a good position at the end of the games."

Mpumalanga ended eighth in the previous edition of the SA Games in KwaZulu-Natal in 2005.

Sporting codes that will form part of the games are boxing, tennis, cricket, gymnastics, netball, table-tennis, golf, athletics, goal ball, swimming, football, hockey and rugby.

Mpatlanyane said MEC Jabu Mahlangu will deliver a message of support to the Mpumalanga team during a send-off billed for Emalahleni Civic Centre on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Joe Mathibe, project manager for the SA Games, said everything has been put into place for the Games.

An opening ceremony will be staged at Seisa Ramabodou Stadium on Monday at 6pm.
