The SA Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) in Eastern Cape yesterday warned that matric results would be poor this year due to "collapsing education in the province".

The impact of the time lost during the civil servants' strike is also central to the feared "catastrophe".

Initially, as part of the draft recovery plan, teachers were expected to continue working during the spring holidays to recover time lost during the strike.

However, the plan grinded to a halt before it was implemented because of differences between the department and teacher unions.

Sadtu provincial secretary Mxolisi Dimaza said union members would go on holiday when the third term comes to an end tomorrow.

"Since we did not agree with the department in terms of payments over the implementation of the reco-very plan, our teachers will go on holiday," said Dimaza.

He said the disagreement had impacted negatively on the progress of the syllabus. Although all the parties at the beginning of the year had committed themselves to improving the matric results, Dimaza said they would not improve.

Provincial education department spokesman Loyiso Pulumani said the unions should take the responsibility because they were the ones who had rejected the recovery plan.
