BRUSSELS - The European Commission yesterday adopted a plan to open European energy markets to greater competition, a spokesman said.

The proposals will force giants such as Germany's E.ON and Electricite de France to separate power generation businesses from their transmission networks.

Utility companies will be forced to sell off their transmission networks or hand over control to an independent operator. This will boost investment in infrastructure. - Reuters
