More of Athletics South Africa (ASA's) technical officials will benefit from the IAAF Technical Officials Education and Certification System that will be held in Pretoria from September 24 to 29.

Molatelo Malehopo, ASA's development manager, told Sowetan yesterday the Level 1 course would be attended by 24 technical officials from their 17 provinces.

The course, which will focus on theory and practical sessions, will be conducted by Vivian Gungaram, who is a member of the technical committee of the world athletics governing body.

The theory part will focus on the IAAF's development programme, officiating philosophy, technical officiating and general rules of competitions, among others.

The participants will also be tested through oral and written examinations on the last day of the course.

The practical session will focus on different events such as running, jumping, throwing, a walking race and combined ones.

Malehopo said those who will succeed in Pretoria will qualify as national technical officials (NTOs).

"They will also be invited by the IAAF for the Level 2 course that will make them the area technical officials," he said.

"We are having about 100 NTO who qualified in the previous courses and we are happy that we will have more officials after this course.

"It is good for our development programme and we hope that those who will succeed will impart the knowledge with their colleagues."
