A traditional healer accused of defrauding several families after promising to bring their dead relatives back to life was arrested yesterday.
Dorah Ngwenya promised in July last year to bring Florah Theledi, 23, of Soshanguve, Pretoria, back from the grave a week after she died.
The dead woman's family paid Ngwenya R15000.
The family opened a case of fraud after realising that they had been conned.
Atteridgeville police spokesman Captain Thomas Mufamadi said Ngwenya, 49, was in bed and under blankets pretending to be sick when an all-male team of police arrived to arrest her.
"A team of female officers was called and she was ordered to get off the bed and accompany them to the police station. She refused and said she was sick.
"She was then dragged off the bed and thrown in the back of the van," said Mufamadi.
The president of Tshwane Faith and Traditional Healers Forum, Isaac Nkanyezi, said Ngwenya's arrest meant nothing to the forum.
"We do not want her behind bars, we want her to pay back all the money she took from the poor people," said Nkanyezi.
Mufamadi said Ngwenya had been charged with fraud and would appear in the Atteridgeville magistrate's court today.
