Welsh Mnguni is off the hook.

On Monday it was reported that the Eastern Cape boxing mentor could face Boxing South Africa's (BSA) firing squad for failing to pitch up with his fighters at a tournament held at Victoria grounds in King William's Town at the weekend to commemorate Steve Biko.

BSA's spokesman Loyiso Mtya said there was very little that they could do in this regard because Mnguni's fighters, Mzwanele Mkiwane and Toto Twani, apparently did not have a signed contract with promoter Simpiwe Mtshala.

Mtshala was himself quoted admitting that Mnguni's fighters had not signed the contracts to feature in his tournament.

Mtshala, of Gabs Promotions, added that he had a verbal agreement with Mnguni as he always does when he features Mnguni's fighters in his tournaments.

But Mnguni's nonappearance did not force the cancellation of the tournament, which formed part of many sporting activities held to pay tribute to the fallen hero.

Mtya said three professional fights and a number of amateur bouts went ahead as planned. But Mtya revealed that Mnguni could be hauled before a disciplinary hearing for allegedly confronting an official inside the boxing ring three weeks ago and allegedly abusing him.
