Cup about pride, not money for Amakhosi
"The R4,25 million first prize is not our priority, ours is to salvage our pride and prestige in this lucrative Telkom Knockout Cup."
These were the words of Kaizer Chiefs communications manager Thebe "Selepe" Mohatle, after his side drew Moroka Swallows at the launch and draw of this prestigious competition yesterday.
"We have a number of issues to settle with some teams in the league this season, so we're going to be uncompromising in any game in this tournament," he said.
"We're going to sweep any team that comes face to face with us aside, and I pity Swallows who we're going to roast in our first cup encounter."
Mohatle added that their team has started to jell.
But The Birds' general manager, Sipho Xulu, said that words were unnecessary now that Chiefs were their daily bread.
"Mohatle can talk until he's blue in the face, but at the end we'll be marching to the quarterfinals," said Xulu.
During the launch, Platinum Stars utility player Hareaipha "Simba" Marumo won a special award of R100000 for his sterling performance in the competition last season, where he scored a hat trick in the final.
Marumo said: "I hope we perform like we did last season and end up in the final."
During the launch, Zikie Molusi, the advertising and promotions executive of the sponsors, said they were proud to sponsor the competition once more.
"As the official sponsors of this knockout, Telkom is proud to maintain its dedication towards the development of football and South African players by providing the platform for our footballers to show off their skill and talent," said Molusi.
"Since the launch of this event last season, it has captured the imagination of players, fans and administrators alike. As one of the official supporters of the 2010 Fifa World Cup, we hope that the competition will help unearth players who will go on to become national heroes."
