The police lost over 1500 more firearms during the past financial year than they did during the previous period, according to the auditor-general.

The police lost over 1500 more firearms during the past financial year than they did during the previous period, according to the auditor-general.

In an audit in the SAPS 2006-07 report, the auditor-general found that 3856 firearms were reported "lost, stolen, or robbed from personnel in the country" during the 12 months to March this year.

In 2005-06, 2297 firearms were reported missing.

The auditor-general also said firearm control registers were not properly maintained by police in six provinces. - Sapa-AFP
