It is totally unacceptable that commuters - already late for work because of train delays - have to wait even longer because of clogged-up exit points manned by only three or four officials.

Under normal circumstances, more gates should be opened to ensure commuters swift exit.

I believe the company has enough money in the kitty to spend on recruiting staff to alleviate this serious problem.

On the morning of September 13, I was among the commuters who crammed Pretoria station's only available exit point. It was manned by four ticket examiners.

To exit quickly, one has to be fit and strong to push and shove his or her way through.

As commuters filed through the steel gates, one by one, a common question asked was: "Why doesn't the company deploy extra staff in the morning and open all the gates?"

Metrorail should give priority to employing more ticket examiners to ease these log jams.
