The death of Mark Ganten-Bein, who was acting chief information officer of the South African Rail Commuter Corporation (SARCC), has robbed the parastatal of one of its committed workers.
Ganten-Bein died at the SARCC's headquarters in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, last Friday.
A graduate with a BCom degree and a masters degree in business leadership, Ganten-Bein was a former board member, acting chief executive and human resources executive of the erstwhile Metrorail.
He would have turned 51 on September 26.
A married father of three, Ganten-Bein was a rugby and motorsport enthusiast who played a vital role in the transformation of the rail corporation he joined in 1991.
Former Metrorail chief executive Zandile Jakavula described him as an icon for staying on at the parastatal when many packed their bags because of transformation.
Ganten-Bein could have had a more lucrative career overseas, but elected to stay on and steered SARCC to new heights. Many at the parastatal depended on his expertise and he did not disappoint.
SARCC board chairman Zukile Nomvete described him as a task master, a thinker and an intellectual.
"Ganten-Bein's death is not only a loss to his family and the SARCC, but to South Africa as a whole," Nomvete said.
He is survived by his wife Beverley and three children.
The funeral service will be held today at 11am at St Marks Anglican Church in North Riding, Johannesburg.
