Both Volkswagen SA (VWSA) and DaimlerChrysler stopped vehicle production at their plants yesterday on the second day of workers' strike at their supplier plants.

Brian Smith, VWSA's human resources director, said most of their 4000 production workers had been sent home as the strike by the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) at supplier plants was having a dramatic impact.

Numsa members in the tyre sector had also been on strike this month and together with the delays of the motor industry development programme, the present strike did not help the industry secure export contracts.

Workers in the industry are demanding a 9 percent wage hike, while employers are offering 8,5 percent. - Sapa
