Four high school pupils have been arrested in connection with two separate armed robberies in Vanderbijlpark in the Vaal.

In one incident, they robbed other pupils of their cellphones at gunpoint.

The arrests have brought to seven the number of pupils apprehended for various crimes in the town in a period of two weeks.

The four De Anker High School pupils are aged between 16 and 18 years.

Two were arrested on Wednesday after they allegedly robbed two pupils from Suiderlig High School, also in Vanderbijlpark.

The other two were arrested yesterday morning at their school. All four are in grades 8 and 9.

Vaal Rand police spokesman captain Veli Mcera said: "Our investigations have revealed that the group was involved in a number of street robberies in the town."

He said their recent robbery was last week when they tried to rob a man at a park in Vanderbijlpark at about 2.30pm.

The man was rescued by his dog which chased the teenagers away. "We suspect that they have a market where they sell the stuff they steal from people," said Mcera.

He said: "We are not going to hesitate to remove dangerous and violent pupils from our schools and ensure the safety of other learners. We also urge parents to discourage their children from carrying dangerous weapons to schools."

Mcera said police were working around the clock to recover the firearm used during the alleged robberies. The boys will appear before the Vanderbijlpark magistrate's court on Monday.
