Supermodel Naomi Campbell has upset conservationists in Kenya over plans to bulldoze a turtle sanctuary and replace it with a hotel and casino.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has upset conservationists in Kenya over plans to bulldoze a turtle sanctuary and replace it with a hotel and casino.

The catwalk queen and former boyfriend, racing tycoon Flavio Briatore, will wreck years of work to save endangered marine life at the Indian Ocean resort of Malindi if plans are given the go- ahead, protestors have claimed.

A spokesman for the Malindi Marine Association says: "This would have a very negative effect on turtle nesting and destroy years of careful project work."

But Campbell is hoping the proposals will be approved - because it will bring

wealth to the African country.

She says: "You have fabulous beaches and people here are just amazingly nice.

But something needs to be corrected to attract big time investors."

Meanwhile, Campbell has spoken out about her departure from the anti-fur campaign launched by animal rights activists in the mid-1990s, insisting she quit as spokesman because of the organisation's crude tactics.

The catwalk star fronted the "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" campaign by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), but was reportedly dropped shortly after the launch for wearing fur in a fashion show.

But Campbell now aims to set the record straight on the issue and remains

defiant about her love of fur.

She says: "When PETA started targeting (Vogue editor) Anna Wintour and

(designer) Karl Lagerfield and putting dead animals on their plate, I felt that they went too far and I thought I didn't want to be a part of this campaign anymore. I thought it was time to put a stop to this.

(But) I do like wearing fur and I still do." - Wenn
