Teachers employed in the scarce skills categories like maths and science will get pay increases from January next year as an incentive to keep them in their posts.

Education Minister Naledi Pandor, who answered oral questions in the National Council of Provinces this week, said there were plans to retain scarce skills by providing incentives.

The teachers in those posts will be eligible for the extra remuneration.

Pandor said because of the shortage of maths and science teachers, she was planning to take in about 2000 foreign teachers to fill the posts.

The minister said according to the government personnel salary system, a total of 1432 foreign teachers were currently employed by the provincial education departments.
