DA laments suppression

The Democratic Alliance yesterday released a critical report on parliamentary oversight, accusing the government of stifling debate and criticism of the government.

The report comes in the wake of the five-day suspension of DA MP Mike Waters by parliament's speaker Baleka Mbete for questioning Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang about her 1976 theft conviction in Botswana.

Yesterday, DA chief whip Ian Davidson said that Waters's expulsion was not the only example of poor oversight by parliament's bosses.

"Our constitution very explicitly gives parliament the right to demand accountability from the government, but over the years it has become markedly less vigorous about exercising this right," said Davidson.
