A Mpumalanga policeman was accosted by two men who held him up at gunpoint and disarmed him in full view of his wife and child on Tuesday.

Inspector Wonder Brown, 35, who is stationed at Hazyview police station, told investigators that he had taken his wife and child to view a house at the railway compound in Hazyview.

He said as he came out of the building two men accosted him and one of them pointed a firearm at him while the other searched him.

Police spokesman Captain John Mbambo said: "The policeman said he could not fight his assailants as one of them had a gun pointed at him. He also told us that it could be dangerous to fight against armed men when there is a child around," said Mbambo.

The attackers took his service pistol and disappeared into nearby bushes, he added.

Police said that Brown immediately went to the station to report the incident at about 3pm.

Police officers then launched a manhunt for the suspects but they were nowhere to be found.

"It is really shocking to see criminals with the guts to attack officers. However, we are hoping to arrest the perpetrators very soon," he said.

Mbambo added that Hazyview police were investigating a case of armed robbery and attempted murder.
