A medical doctor from Guyana in the Caribbean appeared briefly in court in Mpumalanga yesterday on charges of theft and robbery. .

Sean Christopher Cambridge appeared before magistrate Christine Kruger in the Malelane magistrate's court with his two co-accused, Hosea Seloane, 33, and Thabo Hlongwane, 23.

Cambridge was granted bail of R30 000 and the hearing was postponed to September 25 for further police investigations.

Seloane and Hlongwane did not apply for bail and were remanded in custody.

By late yesterday, Cambridge had not yet paid the bail and his lawyer, Pieter Nodia, could not say if his client would pay the bail before last night.

Cambridge, 40, who owns a supermarket at Brits, north of Pretoria, was arrested last Wednesday as he was about to cross the Lebombo border post into Mozambique.

Mpumalanga police told Sowetan that Cambridge was driving a Nissan Navara with false registration plates when he was arrested.

Cambridge allegedly claimed the vehicle belonged to Seloane, who was driving a Land Cruiser behind him.

Police stopped the Land Cruiser and found that it too had false registration numbers.

"Seloane claimed that he was Cambridge's employee and that the Land Cruiser he was driving belonged to Cambridge," said Captain Leonard Hlathi.

Hlongwane also claimed to be working for Cambridge and was also arrested on the scene.

Hlathi said both cars had been reported stolen at gunpoint.
