A 49-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife at a smallholding at Homer, outside Vereeniging, on Monday night.

Vaal Rand police spokesman Captain Veli Mcera said the man allegedly assaulted his wife, Kuith Khumalo, before she died.

Police said Khumalo was aged between 40 and 45 years.

"We do not know what caused the fight and investigations are continuing," said Mcera.

Sowetan yesterday visited the smallholding where the couple lived. Neighbours and other tenants said they were shocked when they saw Khumalo's body being removed by the authorities.

Maki Mogwase, 40, said Khumalo was not wellknown in the area.

Mogwase said: "She was always in the house. We only saw her when she went outside to do the washing or when she went to the shops."

Mogwase said at about 4pm on Monday, the man came to her house and talked to her about the escalating crime in their area.

"While he was talking about crime in our neighbourhood, I thought he was concerned. I was shocked when he was later arrested for allegedly killing his wife," said Mogwase.

The man is expected to appear in the Vereeniging magistrate's court soon on a charge of murder.

Mcera said a post-mortem would reveal the cause of death.
