A medical doctor who owns a supermarket at Brits, north of Pretoria, appeared briefly in a court in Mpumalanga yesterday on charges of theft and robbery.

Sean Christopher Cambridge, 40, who is from Guyana in the Caribbean, was arrested last Wednesday as he was about to cross the Lebombo border post into Mozambique.

Cambridge and two others unsuccessfully applied for bail in the Komatipoort magistrate's court yesterday and were all remanded in custody.

Mpumalanga police told Sowetan that Cambridge was driving a Nissan Navara with false registration plates when he was arrested.

Cambridge allegedly claimed the vehicle belonged to Hosea Seloane, 33, who was driving a Land Cruiser behind him.

Police stopped the Land Cruiser and found that it too had false registration numbers.

"Seloane claimed that he was Cambridge's employee and that the Land Cruiser he was driving belonged to Cambridge," said Captain Leonard Hlathi yesterday.

A third suspect, Thabo Jim Hlongwane, 23, who also claimed to be working for Cambridge, was also arrested on the scene.

Hlathi said both cars had been reported stolen at gunpoint.
