Broken memories

Tombstones are monuments for future generations of a family to honour and remember those who have passed on.

Tombstones are monuments for future generations of a family to honour and remember those who have passed on.

It is for this reason that we are shocked and angered by the desecration of Aggrey Klaaste's tombstone at Avalon Cemetery in Soweto - only hours after it was unveiled at the weekend.

A former editor-in-chief of Sowetan and champion of this newspaper's Nation Building campaign, Klaaste and his family do not deserve such cruelty.

Instead of celebrating his memory, his wife and children now have to pick up the pieces and reconstruct another tombstone at double the cost.

We hope the police will hold nothing in reserve in tracing and arresting those responsible for this criminal deed.
