Two Chinese nationals accused of assaulting award-wining Eastern Cape gospel singer Lusanda Mcinga, 43, at the weekend, appeared briefly in the Willowvale magistrate's court yesterday.
The suspects, Jianpiwig Weng, 30, and Ping Weng, 23, allegedly assaulted Mcinga after she questioned them about fake DVDs, CDs and cassettes they were selling in their store on Saturday afternoon. Mcinga says she cannot hear properly in one ear.
Police spokesman Jackson Manatha said when Mcinga entered the shop owned by the suspects she "was surprised to see her DVD sold for R60".
She allegedly walked past the stands where the DVDs, CDs and cassettes were and realised that her music was pirated.
Manatha said a misunderstanding took place and the two Chinese men assaulted the singer with their fists. Mcinga reported the incident at the Willowvale police station and a case of common assault was opened.
The suspects were arrested by Willowvale police on Sunday evening in their house at Willowvale. During their court appearance yesterday, they were not asked to plead and were each granted bail of R1000.
The case was postponed to October 10 for further investigation and also to get an interpreter as the suspects were not fluent in English.
