An all-night drinking binge at a village tavern ended tragically when one of the patrons was beaten to death.

The incident took place at Phetole village in GaMatlala outside Polokwane.

Limpopo police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba, said a group of 11 people allegedly attacked a 26-year-old man with stones and other objects.

He said the 11, two of whom are women, had been arrested and would appear in the Matlala magistrates' court today.

Ramatseba said the villagers were drinking at a local tavern. An argument broke out, and the group to leave.

"It was at about 4am when the whole group left for their respective homes," said Ramatseba.

He said along the way home the argument continued.

Suddenly the rest of the revellers turned on one man.

They ganged up against him, hitting and kicking him.

Ramatseba said it appeared the group worked with the victim at a nearby farm.

The dead man was identified as Thabo John Selepe, 26, who lived in the village.
