An unidentified man was found hanging from a tree in Braamfischerville, Soweto, on Friday.
He was wearing a brown jacket, a pair of blue jeans and a pair of black-and-white Reebok takkies.
His shoelaces had been used to tie his hands behind his back.
Police spokesman Sergeant Sefako Xaba said the man was aged between 20 and 25.
Xaba ruled out the possibility the man may have committed suicide.
"We appeal to anyone who has a missing male relative to go to the government mortuary."
Johannes Skhakhane, who lives close by, said the area was a haven for criminals.
A murder docket has been opened.
