Should it dissolve to save itself from an apparent slide into oblivion?
We ask this in the wake of the devastating blow the party has been dealt by the mass exodus of key members including its deputy president, Themba Godi, to the new African People's Convention.
In his parting shot, Godi notes the PAC had become ideologically moribund, thanks to the bitter infighting that has dogged the party since it was formed in 1959.
Godi accuses the PAC, under president Letlapa Mphahlele, of a lack of vision and poor leadership.
We know Godi to be a man of integrity and a staunch believer in the PAC's ideal of a united Africa that should take its rightful place in world politics while remaining true to its pan-African culture and tradition.
But time has shown the PAC's ideal of a United States of Africa would forever be a fleeting illusion.
This was an ideal to be pursued, but never to be attained, to borrow the words of Haile Selassie, the late emperor of Ethiopia.
Having said that, one cannot ignore the role self- preservation would have played in Godi's act of crosstitution.
It remains to be seen whether he will succeed where the PAC and Azapo have failed - that is to grow the APC into a sizeable opposition party with a credible voice in the black community.
Time will tell.
