Sport returns to former mecca

Professional boxing returns to the Carousel resort in Hammanskraal on September 21.

This gambling resort was once revered as being the Mecca of boxing for having hosted the most world title fights.

Legends like Vuyani Bungu, Lehlohonolo Ledwaba and Namibian Harry Simon became IBF and WBO champions there.

It was the home of Golden Gloves, whose boss Rodney Berman staged the ground- breaking four world title fights dubbed amaButho Empi - Warriors at War - in 1997.

Jacob Matlala, who defended his IBA junior flyweight belt against Luis Doria in one of those four title fights, will return to the Carousel with his colleague Branco Milenkovic on September 21. They will stage two title fights - a South African and a WBC International mini flyweight fight.

SA champion Jonas Kgasago and WBC titleholder Zukisani Kwayiba will defend their belts against Capetonian Mzukisi Myeki and Filipino Alex Aroy respectively.

Kgasago, from Namakgale in Limpopo, won the SA title against Eliot Tokona with a seventh-round TKO in May. Kgasago has five knockouts from 10 victories against a single defeat, while Myeki has an uninspiring CV of six wins, two losses and three draws.

Kwayiba, who is from Duncan Village in East London, won the title last September from Gabriel Pumar with a 10th-round TKO. It was Kwayiba's seventh stoppage in nine wins from as many fights.

The fight against Aroy will be his second title defence. The visitor has 12 wins (6 KOs), four defeats and one no-contest.

Meanwhile, former SA, WBC International and All African featherweight champion Anthony Tshehla, top-ranked junior lightweight Jasper Seroka and the unbeaten Van Heerden brothers, Chris and Michael, will wow fight fans.

Matlala and Milenkovic are still riding high after promoting the IBF junior lightweight title fight between holder Mzonke Fana and Javier Alvarez in Klerksdorp last weekend.
