Soon-to-retire Anglican Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane has urged the youth to study hard and take their education seriously if they wanted to have a bright future.
Ndungane, who has been leader of the church since 1996, will retire at the end of the year. He was speaking at the Historic Schools Restoration Project (HSRP) in Limpopo yesterday.
The function was held at St Marks Comprehensive College in Jane Furse.
The school was once run by the Anglican Church before apartheid education was enforced and the school taken over by the then repressive government.
The HSRP is the brainchild of National Arts and Culture Minister Pallo Jordan, who asked Ndungane to head the ambitious project.
"I want to warn the young generation that without education they are going nowhere," Ndungane said.
He saidprominent people such as Nelson Mandela were products of such schools.
"If the democracy that we won through blood and sweat is to succeed, we need to invest in education. It is for this reason that I have taken it upon myself to lead such an ambitious project," he said.
Ndungane hinted that the HSRP had already produced a generic document to teach the youth about the project's vision.
"It is with excitement that we share our vision with you so that young learners should hold their heads high and take leadership positions in their future," he said.
Ndungane also promised to pray for all the country's matriculants as they prepare for their final examinations.
The archbishop was scheduled to visit three other schools in Limpopo before going back to Cape Town.
