After years of being cast in the shadow of attention, South African traditional music has finally taken centre stage.

The genre that has been neglected for too long has set up its own South African Traditional Music Awards (Satma).

This is after complaints that the established South African Music Awards (Sama) do not cater for traditional music.

Joe Mafela, the spokesman of Satma, said: "The aim is to acknowledge all traditional musicians across racial and ethnic backgrounds."
