Having successfully hosted the Yellow Pages Ultimate Athletics track and field and the Athletics South Africa cross-country events last year, Ben Makola, Mpumalanga Athletics president, is adamant that this year's South African Cross-Country Championships will be much more organised.

"We gained valuable experience last year and we found it easy to organise this year's event," he said.

Makola said preparation for the event is at an advanced stage.

"We have already spoken with the emergency unit and the safety side will be tied. We will be doing our final inspection on Friday [tomorrow]," he said.

The Cross-Country Championships is billed for Lesedi Village, near Witbank in Mpumalanga on Saturday. More than 3000 athletes from 17 regions are expected to descend on the area to compete in the event.

They will compete in the 4km, 6km, 8km and 12km races. Makola said the Mpumalanga teams they have selected will make the province proud.
