Former Scorpions prosecutor Portia Kgantsi will know on September 16 whether the string of charges she faces will be dropped or whether she will be convicted.
Her lawyer Johan Pretorius yesterday called on Judge Ezra Goldstein to acquit his client as the main witness, John Afolabi, could not be called to testify.
In his closing argument Pretorius argued in the Johannesburg high court that the evidence against Kgantsi, 39, was fabricated or reconstructed.
Afolabi died in custody at the Sandton police station before Kgantsi's case started.
The state relied on the written records of meetings Afolabi held with Kgantsi as evidence.
He was arrested with fellow Nigerian national Dijbril Issa Mohamedou for fraud.
The state alleges that Kgantsi, who was attached to the National Prosecuting Authority, tried to extort money from Afolabi and Mohamedou.
She faces charges of corruption, extortion, attempted theft, defeating the ends of justice and providing false information.
Pretorius argued that other witnesses had been called only to substantiate Afolabi's evidence.
Kgantsi remains in custody.
