About 300 workers at the Limpopo department of education were left in the lurch after the abrupt termination of their contracts without prior notice.

The workers - some of whom have worked for more than four years - blame the department's head, Zwo Nevhutalu, for their plight.

They worked in the department's book unit in various districts of the province until their contracts were terminated last month.

When he joined the department, Nevhutalu allegedly recruited most of his former staff at the Independent Electoral Commission where he was provincial head.

Yesterday at the department's head offices in Polokwane, most of them were staging a sit-in at the head office hoping that someone caring in the department would attend to their plight.

Mokgethwa Mmatabane, 32, who had been working in the department since 2003 was told that her contract would not be renewed last month.

Spokesman for the department Ndo Mangala said the contracts were not renewed as they did not accommodate the department's new organogram.
