A pregnant teenager got the shock of her life when she went to the toilet and a baby boy popped out of her instead.
The 17-year-old from Luganda township outside Klaarwater in KwaZulu-Natal, who was eight months pregnant, gave birth prematurely on Monday night.
The baby was rescued by members of the metro police and of the emergency services.
ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said yesterday that paramedics responded to a call that a baby had fallen into a toilet.
"The metro rescue team had to tear down the toilet to get to the newborn.
"He was taken out of the pit latrine and, fortunately, given a clean bill of health.
"The baby and mother were taken to RK Khan Hospital in Durban," Banks said.
He said there had been an increase in the number of babies rescued from toilets recently.
Meanwhile, also on Monday night, a foetus was found dumped into a long-drop pit latrine at Copesville outside Pietermaritzburg.
Police spokesman Joey Jeevan said a docket of concealment of birth had been opened.
"The foetus was found in a public toilet. The baby was already dead. We appeal to the public to come forward with any information that will help police solve this case," Jeevan said.
Cookie Edwards, director for Network Against Women and Children Abuse, said such incidents were shocking and must be controlled.
"It is wrong. There are organisations in our communities who can help women who experience difficulty or who wish to give up their babies for adoption."
