Central Gauteng Athletics yesterday (CGA) named a massive squad of more than 200 athletes for the South African Cross-Country Championships in Witbank on Saturday.

Stephen Khanyile, CGA cross-country commission convenor, said they were confident that the team they selected would sweep the boards.

The majority of the athletes in the star-studded CGA team have represented South Africa at various competitions globally.

They include Isaac Mboyase, Tshamano Setone, Ruben Ramolefe, Violet Raseboya, Poppy Mlambo, Rene Kalmer, Lebohang and Lebohang Phalula.

As for Mboyase, he is looking forward to doing well after a dismal performance at the World Student Games in Thailand last month.

"I want to be included in the national team to the Southern Africa and world championships next year," said Mboyase.

Khanyile said: "There is no doubt we have selected the cream of the province, its also great that we have a number of youngsters that we are grooming for the future.

"We have decided to make cross-country one of the areas where we need to pay special attention in terms of our development programme.

"Athletics super powers like Kenya and Ethiopia have made it compulsory for their young athletes to participate in cross-country."

Other athletes in the CGA team are: Dominic Khoza, Themba Miya, Sikhumbuzo Seme, Vincent Kutoane, Sello Legodi, Thuso Phaswana, Tshifhiwa Mundalamo, Mpho Mabuza, Elizabeth Phaka, Chanelle Olivier, Mmatseko Monareng, Theo Rafiri, Lena Mokwa, Praxedus Dim, Martha Ramochela, Anna Masilo, Tumelo Mokgethi, Amukelani Baloyi, Tebogo Ngakane, Zinyane Siyohle and Nkululeko Madonsela.
