South Africa will showcase its indigenous games in North Korea next year.
This was revealed by Makhenkesi Stofile, the minister of sport and recreation, at the fourth edition of the 2007 national indigenous games staged at Mdantsane in Eastern Cape at the weekend.
"Next year North Korea will be hosting similar games. We have been invited and we are excited about it," said Stofile.
More than 800 competitors, judges and technical personnel attended the event, to determine the national champions in eight different games.
The event was hosted by Mpumalanga last year, Western Cape in 2005 and Limpopo in 2004.
The games played included morabaraba, intonga, diketo, kgati, dibeke, jukskei, ncuva and kho-kho
Stofile said he was concerned that indigenous games on the African continent were still unknown in their respective countries.
"This has reduced us to eternal second-rate athletes as we must always imitate other people and try to match them in their indigenous games," he said.
"We Africans must also take something indigenous to the rest of the world. This is what this festival tries to achieve."
Stofile said they hope to send demonstration teams for one or two of South Africa's indigenous games to North Korea.
"This way we will deepen the friendship and solidarity between the two great nations," he said.
In the results, North West continued their dominance as they safely defended their honours for the fourth successive year with 22 points.
Mpumalanga improved from bottom of the log last year to s second-place finish with 12 points.
The rest of the results: 3 - KwaZulu-Natal (10 points); 4 - Limpopo (10); 5 - Western Cape (9); 6 - Gauteng (8); 7 - Free State (5); 8 - Eastern Cape (3); 9 - Northern Cape (1).
