Telkom and MTN issued cautionary announcements yesterday confirming Sunday's report in the Business Times that they are in negotiations. The announcements confirmed speculation that Telkom proposes to sell its half of Vodacom to Britain's Vodafone, opening the way for MTN to buy Telkom's fixed-line network. The deal would see Telkom switch from being the half-owner of South Africa's largest cellphone network to a subsidiary of Africa's largest cellphone network operator. - Staff Reporter
