The Limpopo department of economic development, environment and tourism has expressed concern over the discovery of an illegal medical waste-dump site in Polokwane.

The dump site was discovered last week in Nirvana suburb after residents complained about the smell from the toxic waste. Dumped material includes expired medicines and tablets.

Department spokesman, Lehlogonolo Masoga, said eco-police were investigating the matter

The Medical Environment Conservation Act classifies medical waste as hazardous waste, and such waste is not allowed to be dumped at any dump site. In terms of the act, medical waste can only be dumped at a site in Holfontein, Gauteng.
