The woman who was caught allegedly trying to steal a baby in Tshilidzi Hospital, Venda, was denied mental observation on Friday.

Thabelo Portia Mulaudzi, 18, was arrested last month at a maternity ward while dressing a baby she claimed was hers.

Her attorney, Jeff Tshiredo, who had applied for Mulaudzi to be sent for mental observation, failed in his petition.

The state prosecutor at the Thohoyandou magistrate's court, Zwogangani Mabodi, argued that Mulaudzi entered the hospital to steal a baby. He said that Mulaudzi had pretended to be pregnant before trying to steal the baby.

Tshiredo said his client should be granted bail because the state had proved her to be mentally fit.

He also said that Mulaudzi had no previous medical report relating to mental problems.

Mulaudzi was granted bail of R1500 and warned to attend court for all the imminent proceedings.
