Some of the Malian security officers taken hostage in northeastern Mali earlier this week have been released, military officials said yesterday. Dozens remained in captivity.

Nearly 40 security officers were seized in two raids by gunmen on Sunday and Monday. A government statement identified the attackers as "armed bandits", a term that has been used to refer to Tuareg rebels active in the area. - Sapa-AP
