The Limpopo Roads and Transport Department will be on full alert this weekend as thousands of ZCC worshippers head for Moria near Polokwane.

Law enforcement will also be stepped up to improve safety on the N1 as traffic volumes soar.

As from today, thousands of faithful in both the Barnabas and Engenas sects of the Zion Christian Church make their way to their respective headquarters for the annual spring pilgrimages.

Departmental spokesman Boiki Tsedu said plans had been finalised in line with challenges identified as possible causes of the rise in road accidents during this period.

"We are confident our plans will ensure increased safety during this period and beyond.

"We urge all road users and motorists in particular to cooperate in making the roads safer. We also warn anyone violating traffic rules they will face the full might of the law.

"We will ensure the rate of accidents is dramatically reduced this year," said Tsedu.

He added there were plans to set up a major roadblock on the N1 tonight at which transport MEC Justice Piitso will be present. He assured travellers the province would not tolerate lawlessness on its roads.
