Thami Ngubeni, editor of O magazine South Africa, wants women to speak with one voice and have a common vision to fight violence against them and children.

Ngubeni was speaking at a gala dinner at Emperor's Palace on Friday to honour the Gauteng Department of Social Development's women staff members.

Sello Mokoena, the department's spokesman, said the event was planned to show appreciation for the work women do in society.

"We just wanted to say that we value their contribution as workers, mothers, individuals and groups.

They need to know the department acknowledges all their hard work and the role they play in society," said Mokoena.

"I believe women have the power to change any situation. We should not be caged in our own country. If we can define a common vision and speak with one voice, we can make our country a better and safe place for all. If we can dream it, we can achieve it," Ngubeni said.

Gloria Morekhure, education and communication officer at the National Credit Regulator, said women had to be confident and assertive to survive the credit market.

After the formalities, the delegates boogied as DJ Zinhle played their favourite sounds.
