South Africa, and Gauteng in particular, has been offered the opportunity to learn from Germany's experience in hosting a World Cup.
Yesterday, visiting Germany's Baden-Wuerttemberg Prime Minister Gunther Oettinger called on Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa to take advantage of the relationship the two parties have established to learn about the challenges of hosting a World Cup.
Germany hosted the Fifa World Cup last year.
"In hosting the 2010 World Cup South Africa is going to get a world profile it has never experienced before. Germany has the experience and South Africa, Gauteng in particular, can learn from that experience," said the German leader.
Oettinger said Gauteng was important because it would host the opening and the final game "which I hope will be a dream final between South Africa and Germany", as well as 18 other games.
Oettinger invited the Gauteng government to visit Germany next year "to come and see our infrastructure and how our tourism sector has grown since we hosted the World Cup".
He said the visit should coincide with the European Cup in Sweden "so that you can see how they cope with the crowds".
The two provinces have also formed a partnership which will lead to Gauteng developing its film and motor industries.
"Germany has a well-developed film industry and we can tap into that not only in the production of blockbusters but at community level where people can tell their stories," said Shilowa.
