The Pan Africanist Congress in Limpopo wants the Turfloop campus of the University of Limpopo to be named after PAC stalwart Zephania Mothopeng.

Mothopeng fought against "Bantu education" long before the Soweto students' uprisings of 1976.

Pan Africanist Youth Congress and Pan Africanist Students Movement, the party's youth and student wings, have support the demand to honour Mothopeng.

"This is an institution of intellectuals and cannot be named after a river or a mountain while there are people who fought for the liberation of both students and mankind after whom it can be named," Elvis Molapo, the general secretary of the PAC in Limpopo, said yesterday.

"As a result, it is logical to rename the institution after Zephania Lenkoane Mothopeng, who contributed signifi- cantly towards the fight against Bantu education."

Molapo said the party had petitioned the university's management about the name change.

The university's vice-chancellor, Professor Mahlo Mokgalong, confirmed yesterday that they had received documents demanding the name change.
