Mabel Choeu, a prominent community leader from Seshego township in Polokwane, has died.

Choeu was one of the first people to graduate with a BA Social Work degree from the University of Limpopo's Turfloop campus.

Choeu was the mother of soccer legend and manager of Mamelodi Sundowns, Harris "TV 4" Choeu.

She died in GaRankuwa on Saturday at the age of 81.

"She was suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure. She was always hospitalised because of her weak health," said Choeu.

"My mother became sick on Friday night and was rushed to Dr George Mukhari Hospital where she died the following morning."

Thabo Makunyane, executive mayor of Polokwane Municipality, said they were saddened by the death of Choeu.

"She was respected throughout the country. Our condolences to her family."

Mma Choeu was also involved in various community projects in Seshego.

In 1990, Choeu joined the ANC as a member of the Seshego branch.

She was also involved in the affairs of Seshego Civic Association and the local Anglican Church.

Choeu will be buried at GaRankuwa Cemetery on Saturday.

The funeral service will be held at St Peters' Anglican Church, starting at 7am.
