The high-level police task team set up to probe faction fighting involving ANC members at Steadville in Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal has made a breakthrough.

Yesterday two men were arrested in connection with the violence which started in 2000 and has claimed about 50 lives.

The men will appear in a local magistrate's court today.

The team, headed by Senior Superintendent Simon Madonsela, was appointed on Sunday by Safety and Liaison MEC Bheki Cele.

Madonsela said the arrests came within hours of his team setting up office in the area.

"The team will probe the deaths of all those killed in Steadville since 2000. We have confirmed that the fighting is between two factions within the ANC.

"We expect to make more arrests and put an end to the violence."

The team will also probe allegations that some women were harbouring known criminals.

It has even been alleged they hide weapons under their skirts.

The team will also probe incidents of gang violence between the Ndawo and Mangethe gangs.

Former ANC leaders Peter Ndawo and Mangethe Zwane were killed in 2003 and 2005 respectively.

Since their deaths their members have been at each others' throats, seeking revenge for their murders.

Cele set up the team after expressing disillusionment with local police's failure to handle the situation.
