KwaZulu-Natal's MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Bheki Cele has appointed a police task team to resolve conflict in the "notorious" Steadville township in Ladysmith.

The task team led by Senior Superintendent Simon Madonsela will assume its duties today and report back to the MEC in two weeks.

Cele responded after members of the local community complained about a lack of safety.

Thousands of people from the impoverished township gathered at a taxi rank to voice their grievances.

The area has been marred by alleged faction fighting among ANC leaders.

Cele said it was important that ANC leaders visit the area to help resolve the problem.

"Police should arrest those behind the violence .

"We have brought this police task team into being after complaints that police in Ladysmith failed to deal with violence and crime perpetrators," he said.
