A senior Department of Health and Social Development official in Limpopo has been suspended for alleged financial indiscipline.

Anton van Geefen, the department's acting chief financial officer, was suspended on Friday.

He has been charged with 21 counts of misconduct and is expected to appear before a departmental internal disciplinary hearing.

Van Geefen's suspension comes after he allegedly authorised expenditure of more than R200million without following proper financial procedures.

The suspension is in line with recommendations by the standing committee on public accounts (Scopa).

Scopa insists action should be taken against all government officials who squander public money.

Phuti Seloba, the departmental spokesman, confirmed Van Geefen's suspension yesterday.

"It is true that we have suspended Van Geefen pending an investigation."

Van Geefen has been told to stay at home to allow for investigations into his activities.

"We believe it will be in the best interest of both parties to relieve him of his duties. He also needs time to prepare for his defence," said Seloba.

Van Geefen is also accused of having used incorrect systems to make payments for services rendered to the department.

He had been acting in the position for more than two years now.
