Ncube demands evidence of adultery

HARARE - Lawyers for Zimbabwe's Roman Catholic Archbishop Pius Ncube, who is being sued for adultery, have called for his accuser to provide evidence before a plea is entered, an independent weekly reported yesterday.

HARARE - Lawyers for Zimbabwe's Roman Catholic Archbishop Pius Ncube, who is being sued for adultery, have called for his accuser to provide evidence before a plea is entered, an independent weekly reported yesterday.

Ncube's lawyer has asked that Onesimus Sibanda, who claims the archbishop had sex with his wife Rosemary, provide "dates, times, venues of the alleged acts of adultery and details of those who witnessed the alleged acts", The Standard reported.

The application by lawyer Nicholas Mathonsi to the Bulawayo court comes after Sibanda refused to provide evidence of his claims, saying "evidence can only be heard in court during trial,".

Last month state media published pictures they claimed depicted the Bulawayo archbishop, a fearless critic of President Robert Mugabe, having sex with Sibanda's wife.

They claimed the pictures were taken secretly with cameras set up by a private investigator hired by Sibanda to secure evidence of the alleged adultery.

He is now suing Ncube for Z$20billion (more than R1,1million).

Mugabe has since rebuked the cleric for "snatching other people's women" and breaking his vow of celibacy.

He also warned that church leaders who had become increasingly critical of him were treading a "dangerous path". Ncube, 61, has often urged the ouster of Mugabe, calling him a "violent person". - Sapa-AP
