Gauteng MEC for Education Angie Motshekga has accused her department's chief director of districts, Thami Mali, of conducting an illegal investigation about her and being a "law unto himself".

Motshekga, pictured, yesterday denied The Star's report that she was under investigation by the auditor general for irregularities.

The paper reported that Motshekga was being probed for having ties to a close corporation that supplied goods or rendered services to the department.

Apparently Mali conducted an illegal investigation when he questioned staff in the finance department about Motshekga's recent visit to Russia with Premier Mbhazima Shilowa.

He wanted to know whether Motshekga's trip was organised by Sechaba travel agency and whether her husband was part of the Sechaba trust.

"There is no investigation by the auditor general. Even if there was an audit, it would be standard procedure to question everyone. That would not mean people were being investigated," she said.
