A senior official at Emadlangeni municipality in Utrecht in northern KwaZulu-Natal and a driving school owner appeared in court for fraud and corruption.

Rashida Mehmood, 64, of Sharzi Driving School and examiner Marie Smith, 52, were arrested after months of investigation by the police and the Transport Department's fraud and corruption unit.

They were released on bail in the Newcastle magistrates' court this week and will appear again on September 14. They allegedly took bribes in return for licences.
